Ice Daming is a common occurrence in Newfoundland, with the frosty winter’s along with odd mild days it can get dramatic pretty quick, if it occurs. Ice damming, is simply the melting of the snow on the roof top and the refreezing of it on the bottom by the eavestrough. This process over and over again can cause massive ice buildup that in extreme cases can come into your attic and then leak thru your walls.
The main preventable cause of this is heat loss thru your attic due to lack of insulation or improper vapour barrier. This heat that is lost rises to the top of the roof and causes the snow on it to melt, and also causes condensation in the house.
If you find yourself in a position where you are worried because of ice dams call us and we will come out and assess and remove the snow and Ice if necessary.
